Climbers Ian A Sykes MBE and Ian D Sutherland launched Nevisport in 1970 in the shadow of Ben Nevis after becoming frustrated with the limited range of climbing gear available in UK retailers.

With money saved from Sykes’ time in the RAF and British Antarctic Survey team, the pair, who were then active members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team, built the first Nevisport store in Fort William. In just four years, the business had to expand, opening a second location in Glasgow to handle the demand and become one of the largest outdoor specialty merchants in the nation.
